rapture

"The Rapture didn't happen! We're still here..." I saw this on a church billboard yesterday and I smiled. Yes, we're still here. Either in church or not. Personally I didn't think the world would end, but I'm sure there were many who were concerned.

Last week I decided to freeze my Facebook profile. Yes, can you believe it? I've had an active profile for probably 6 years and I decided it was time to take a break. I figure it will save me time- no messages or friend requests to respond to, no tempting to aimlessly wander through pages (not that it was a major past time for me, but nonetheless...), and no uploading photos to share them.

Have I missed it? No. What is funny, though, is that others have missed me. Not literally missed me as in sad that my profile isn't there, but they've noticed that it's gone. I had one friend ask me if we were still friends. If our friendship is based on whether or not we're friends on Facebook, then we're in trouble.

How long will this last? I don't know. I have a friend who gave it up for Lent this year and didn't miss it so he didn't get back on. Maybe I'll decide that I don't want to return for a while, maybe it will be short-lived. Who knows. All I know is that right now, it's nice not to have social media in my life. If you want to know about me, spend some time with me. If you want to see me, look for the real live version instead of photos. If you want to be friends, the most meaningful interactions are purposeful and don't usually happen in social media.

So I guess there was a Facebook rapture- I was taken from it, disappeared with no warning, and no indication of when I'll return.
