Some of you guys will know that 3 years ago I went to Ghana with a medical team to do nutrition counseling. The truth is that I did a little nutrition counseling and a lot more wound care, triage, and pharmacy. It's the experience that made me realize I love hands-on patient care. It's the initial impetus for me to look into becoming a nurse practitioner. At the time of the trip, I was fairly frustrated that I had spent so much time researching the Ghanaian diet and the typical deficiencies seen there in preparation, but didn't really get to do what I prepared to do. Now I'm thankful for the way it all went down and never did I think so much would come and still is coming from it.
This week, two of my patients are from West Africa, and one of the two from Ghana. I'm realizing that the part of Atlanta that I live in has many African immigrants. But still... What are the chances? My knowledge of West African culture and eating habits have really come in handy. I'd venture to say that I've used my knowledge more here in the last 3 days than I did in Ghana. It's been fun.
